Team Girls is dedicated to fostering and promoting girls’ participation in sport. It’s about girls supporting girls, building up their confidence, and knowing they’re stronger when they stand together – on and off the court.
As the community netball season comes to a close, Suncorp Team Girls ambassador Laura Geitz gives her tips for reflecting on the season just gone, staying active and keeping in touch with your teammates during the off-season.
Hi, I'm Laura Geitz, Suncorp Team Girls ambassador and former Australian Diamonds and Queensland Firebirds Captain. And here are my top tips for staying active and connected with your teammates during the netball offseason.
The off season is about refreshing and getting ready for the season ahead. My top tips are, making sure you stay connected with your teammates. The reason we play netball is because it's a team sport and we love that team aspect. So, make sure you get your teammates together, go to a local cafe or a walk just to make sure you're all staying connected in the off season.
Sometimes we experience trickier seasons than others. That might mean that you've missed out on a team that you desperately wanted to make. You might have had a coach that just didn't connect with you or teammates. Sometimes we just don't find the perfect team. But what I want to say to you is, we've all been there. What's important now is for you to hang in there.
I'm going to direct you to the Suncorp Team Girls Hub because there are some incredible resources from professional players that have been in your shoes and now, they're playing netball for their country and for their state. So remember, if you head there, have a listen. The reason we play netball is because we love to have fun, we love to stay connected with friends and we also love being active and healthy.
Here are some of my top tips for staying active in the off season. If you head to the Suncorp Team Girls Hub there are so many drills and skills on there. In particular, my favourite is Courtney Bruce and the defensive work that she does in the circle. Number two, flexibility is so important. Stretching keeping your body nice and limber and strong in the off season can help you reduce your injuries for the season ahead. Number three is agility work. It's a great way to keep your cardio up while also keeping your footwork short and sharp and ready to hit the court next season. Finally, there are so many great competitions in the off season whether it be indoor netball comps, summer twilight comps, so make sure you check out what's on offer in your local area to stay fit and active in the off season.
Well, there you have it. They're my top tips for the off season. I can't wait to see you all out on court next year.
