Know how long you have to claim

The sooner you lodge your claim, the sooner you can request to begin your treatment and rehabilitation. Your claim for a car accident injury should ideally lodged with Suncorp within nine months of incident, but if you have any questions about timeframes, just give us a call on 13 11 60.

Record details of the incident

We can help you gather the necessary information about the accident including:

  • date, time, and location
  • name, contact details and regos of the parties involved
  • photographs or dash cam footage of the accident, and
  • any witness details.

Let the police know

If someone has been injured or there’s significant property damage, it’s vital to report the accident to the police.

Get a medical check-up and treat any immediate injuries

Your recovery is our top priority. It’s important to seek medical attention as soon as possible after the accident and treat any injuries. If you had immediate medical attention, send us the receipt or the bill. It must include:

  • All the items you were treated for.
  • Your treating doctor’s contact details.

Make sure to keep original receipts for all accident-related medical services and details of your travel expenses, such as taxi fares or a vehicle logbook. We’ll help you gather these when you call us.

Finalising your claim

We will provide you with a settlement assessment and work with you to resolve your claim as soon as possible. We’ve written a detailed guide listing what you can claim after a car accident injury.

Once we agree on the final payout, we will fast track your payment directly to your bank account.

What happens if I’m partially or fully at fault?

The Qld CTP scheme is an ‘at-fault’ scheme, which means if you are the driver who causes a motor vehicle accident and found fully at fault, you will not be entitled to compensation through a CTP insurer. However, if you have been seriously injured in a motor accident in QLD and were at fault, you may be able to receive necessary and reasonable care and treatment through the National Injury Insurance Scheme (NIISQ).

If you are partially at fault, you may still be eligible to claim, but may have a reduced settlement depending on much your actions contributed to causing the accident.

Do I need a lawyer to make a car accident injury claim?

No, you don’t need a lawyer. A no win no fee lawyer can charge up to 50% of your compensation* by law. Dealing directly with Suncorp Insurance, 100% of your compensation* is paid to you.

Most car accident injury claims can be resolved quickly and easily dealing directly through the insurer – in FY23 Queensland CTP insurance direct claims were resolved on average more than three times faster than represented claims.1

As Queensland’s largest CTP insurer, the team of personal injury claims specialists at Suncorp Insurance understand injury and work directly with your healthcare providers to ensure the care you receive is tailored to your needs.

*Your ‘compensation’ means your damages plus that part of your legal costs payable by the Insurer less the total of the applicable statutory refunds (e.g. to Medicare) and disbursements (e.g. fees for medical reports).
