Have you ever wondered who can help you exercise the right way, especially if you have a complex health condition or injury? That's where Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) come in.
Who are AEPs?
AEPs are highly qualified professionals who have completed a minimum of four years of study at university, in exercise science, 'Human Movement' and physiology, to specialise in prescribing and supervising exercise for people with complex health conditions.
An Exercise Physiologist:
- is specially qualified to prescribe exercise for those living with injuries, pain or chronic illness
- has the knowledge and skills to design, deliver and evaluate safe exercise programs, and
- apply evidence-based judgment and clinical reasoning to individuals, groups, and the broader community to improve and maintain health status, function, and support re-enablement.
AEPs are different from other exercise specialists
Also setting them apart from other exercise specialists, is the fact that AEPs are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and competencies to design, deliver and evaluate safe and effective exercise interventions for people with acute, sub-acute or chronic medical conditions, injuries or disabilities.
This includes a range of health conditions such as:
- cardiovascular
- metabolic
- neurological
- musculoskeletal
- cancers
- kidney
- respiratory
- pulmonary, and
- mental health.
You can rest assured that an AEP will apply a person-centred approach and work collaboratively with you in supporting your health and wellbeing.
AEPs practice in a culturally safe and inclusive manner according to the principles of person-centred care and apply appropriate in-person and digital practices such as telehealth.
How AEPs can help you meet your health and exercise goals
AEPs understand how the body responds to exercise and how different exercise programs can be tailored to meet individual needs and goals.
Exercise physiologists help you to exercise right by conducting fitness assessments and designing individualised exercise programs that are safe and effective for you.
When developing your exercise program, they consider factors such as:
- your age
- fitness level
- medical history, and
- any current health conditions or injuries.
In addition, exercise physiologists can:
- provide guidance and support throughout the exercise program
- monitor progress
- adjust the program as needed, and
- provide education on proper exercise technique and injury prevention.
By working with an exercise physiologist, you can ensure that your exercise program is tailored to your specific needs, is safe and effective, and will help you achieve your fitness goals in a sustainable manner.
So, you can see why partnering with an Exercise Physiologist can set you on the path to exercising in a way that is not only right, but right for you. They can design an exercise program tailored to your needs and goals, monitor your progress, and provide you with the guidance and support you need to achieve your fitness goals.
