Health Insurance for students
Peace of mind while you study
Suncorp Health Insurance offers you a choice between different levels of Hospital and Extras Cover, so even the most budget-conscious students can find one that suits them best.
This is just a summary. For full details about what is and isn't covered, read the Policy Booklet.
The benefits of being a student and living at home
As a student, money can be tight. If you’re under 31 and a full-time student, there’s a good chance you may be covered under your parents’ Health Insurance policy as a Student Dependant.
You could be a Student Dependant if:
- you’re aged between 21 and 31
- you’re not married and you don’t live with your partner
- you’re currently a full-time student, and
- you’ve been added to your parents’ policy.
Sound like you? If so, get familiar with the health cover policy your family has. If your family is already with Suncorp Health Insurance, explore the different levels of Hospital and Extras Cover, so you know what you’re covered for.
Stress less about healthcare while you study
You probably have plenty on your plate while you’re studying. That’s why Suncorp Health Insurance make it simple to claim, and easy to talk to someone when you need it.

If your parents have health cover with Suncorp Health Insurance, and you satisfy eligibility criteria, you can be added as a Student Dependant. This means while you’re aged 21-25, you can enjoy the same health cover benefits they do.

When you’re buried in textbooks and staring at lecture screens, your eyes may feel some strain. With Starter Extras, you can be covered for 65% back^ on optical and more.

Registered as a Student Dependant
A Student Dependant is a member who is not the Policyholder or the Policyholders Partner and who: is aged between 21 up to the day before their 25th birthday, is engaged in full time study, and is not married and does not have a defacto partner. This person is covered under the family’s health cover at no extra cost. When adding them to the policy you will be required to supply the name of the institution they are studying at and the expected date of graduation.
Medicare Levy Surcharge
The Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) is a government tax on top of the normal Medicare Levy and impacts singles with a taxable income of over $90,000 or families (including couples and single-parents) with a taxable income of over $180,000 who don’t have an appropriate level of private hospital insurance for the full financial year.
Holding any Suncorp Health Insurance Hospital Cover product means you won’t pay the MLS if your income is above the government threshold and you maintain your hospital cover for the full financial year.
