Are decks covered by home insurance?

When are decks covered by home insurance?

Generally, permanent structures on your property like decks will be covered by your home insurance policy – and that includes any level of Suncorp Home and Contents or Building Only Insurance. 

Under a Suncorp Home Insurance policy, your deck is covered for loss or damage caused by insured events, including:

• flood
• lighting
• storm (including hail)
• storm surge
• fire (including bushfire)
• earthquake and tsunami
• theft or burglary

Does home insurance cover my rotting deck?

No. Home insurance doesn’t cover your property for loss or damage connected to general wear, tear and gradual deterioration. Because of this, home maintenance is super important in making sure your home is covered if you do need to claim for an insured event. 

Does home insurance cover my collapsed deck? 

Home insurance can cover a collapsed deck – it will just depend on what caused it to collapse. If a car or tree impacted your deck and caused it to collapse, you would generally be covered*. But if it collapsed due to poor workmanship or deterioration, you wouldn’t be.

Before making a home insurance claim, make sure everyone is safe. In an emergency always call 000. If you need temporary emergency repairs done to make you and your household safe, let us know when you make your claim and we’ll send a professional out ASAP. 

Next up, take pictures or videos of the damage to upload with your claim.
